Julian Jacobs is a PhD student in the MIT-WHOI Joint Program Biological Oceanography department. In the Alexander and Sosik labs, Julian uses a combination of bioinformatics and flow cytometry tools to understand how the physiology and diversity of marine protists impacts carbon and nutrient cycling. Before starting his graduate research in 2026, Julian graduated from Hamilton College in 2024 where he contributed to developing pCO2 sensor systems and quantifying carbon uptake rates by coastal macroalgae. He then worked as a technician at UC Santa Barbara investigating mixotrophy and kleptoplasty among marine plankton through lab experiments and field samples from the Western Antarctic Peninsula.
